Q: Im a student using the campus connection is firewalled. This has led to many inconveniences, including the inability to transfer files via IM to certain people. Nothing is so bad, at least firewall (although, when the band cut in 2/3rds of a whole problem: P cause), but I recently bought a domain and host. When I started trying to upload, I was able to get the file manager to use small files, but once I got to transfer files to or greater than 1MB upload woulndt uploading. Ive had this problem with any host I tried but so far havnt really had much need to upload than 1mb. So I tried ftp, because I had at one time used for one of my sites and had worked over 1mb files. He refused to join when I tried it, so I asked a few friends to try it and they can all connect (they are not on campus). So I call technical support, and they say that the firewall prevents ftping but had nothing to say about the 1mb limit on file manager uploads.
So my question is, can I bypass the firewall? Is there anyway to set up the FTP to work around the firewall. Also does anyone know why I can not upload 1mb through the file manager, cuz if I can get that working ill just use that and forget ftp.

how is me wanting to be able to actually use the internet that we have to pay for making there job a pain in the ass? If they are making us pay for it they shouldn't render it entirely useless for anything besides checking email. As it is its bullshit they cut bandwidth to 15mb/s for a college of 7500 and then block p2p and cut gaming bandwidth, but to prevent anyone from being able to upload files to the internet, especially considering that multimedia is one of the biggest growing major programs here is rediculous. Main reason i got the space i did was to hold my multimedia crap.

Re:Spidey, are you asking about the revovations to the Co-rec and the Cary Quad? Part of the Rec is done along with the Quad. I was talking with some people this weekend who live in the new part of the Quad. So, this is kind of OT but Boilers stick together right?

Re:Contacting the IT department or getting your own connection is your best bet. Trying to get around the campus firewall is a big mistake and can result in lots of problems for you. Asking about it here can also result in being banned as the university put a firewall up for a reason.

Re:There are many ways to firewall and prevent internet abuse. You can try contacting the university IT department or get your own connection. A dsl or cable modem would be ideal and is only 30-70 bucks a month.
