Q: We have a workgroup network at work here and I want access shares on other computers, but I can not . I see all the computers in the workgroup, but when I try to access them I get prompted for a username / PW. the computers are using NTFS, and all are win2000pro. Does anyone know how I can access the computers to get his P / W access at the level of the share? hgave we are a computer with win 98 and that one does not propmt for an MPV, as it helps to all
Thanks

Re:Use each computers name as a user on other computers?
I'm sorry, I was not clear with this. The user of the computer should have a username and password to log into windows networking.
This will allow access to the shared resources on each win2k machine, providing you have put in a user in each machine.

You can configure each computer to log in to the network on startup, and put each computer as a regular user in the other computers.
Set the password to noexpire, and all you have to do then is put in a password at each machine when you start up. This will maintain a modicum of security on your peer-to-peer, without extablishing a domain.
This takes a little running around to get set up properly, but the net result is file sharing without opening up your computers completely to anyone with a laptop and cable.

Re:Cool thanks a bunch. we don't have much of a need for security, but nice to know its there… Just out of curiosity If we were in a domain instead we wouldn't need to do that. correct?

Re:It is win2k causing the problems. You must have accounts on each win2k machine for everyone to log into and access the shares.
