Q: Im in the jungle and Im stuck on dial-up. I am now connected to 7.2 k. Sometimes I get 9.6, but for the most part is already 7.2 k all week. I have a choice of just two ISPs with local numbers for me. I got through them both, they both suck. The ISP I use now just this week moved their activities. I thought she might have problems, so I called them and told them about, they said that it is not their problem. I think it is a bad phone line as they say, but nothing could make these people more would surprise me. Can someone who knows about these things tell me if the phone lines were so bad that I could only connect to 7.2 k, I would not keep getting disconnected or something? The thing is, I can connect fine, and I have not had one disconnect all week, only very slow but steady speeds.
These people were Nazis and I think some of the things they do borders on illegal, but I simply have no choice other than satellite, which Im looking for. At this moment I can not even upload a picture. I do not expect this problem to get better or the ISP or the phone companys debt is simply because nobody cares.
The $ 60 – $ 70 per month for satellite internet is adjacent to priceless for me, and I hear they treat their costomers like cattle. But if it is Im pretty much throwing money away on the Internet now, and I must do something. Ive read a bit, but I still can not decide. Do I trigger this or not? Im so stressed I can not think this through now, and this is more or less a rant I guess, but I really need help deciding.
Thanks for listening and any advice you can give.
Re:I too live in a rural area, My dial up connection was 24K most of the time 26,400 was the best i ever recieved. My problem was the distance that i am from the local switching station. My phone company is the only local number dial up that i can get where i live. Other people that live closer to town get much quicker speeds with the same setup.
To make a long story short i now have a Direcway satalite setup, And am very happy with it.

Eh, most of the ISPs in my local area (rural Indiana) suck. It's not the phone lines, because the ISP I'm with now doesn't have anywhere near the number and size of problems that the others do. Just saying that it doesn't have to be the phone lines, but in this case it might very well be. I have some friends (who live about 2 miles away) who can only get 19.2kbit/sec connects with any ISP – that is definitely a phone line problem.
Anyway, I doubt calling your phone company would do anything, but it's worth a try, I guess.
I can't think of a thing other than line condition that could make his connection speed 7.2K. The ISP has digital lines, if they're up they're capable of full speed. Some RAS units seem to negotiate higher connection speeds than others (even though the throughput doesn't always seem as fast…), but that shouldn't result in speeds that low. There isn't much your ISP can do to change your connection speed where they could be at fault. If you connect at 56K but then downloads creep, sure it may be their problem. But in this situation I couldn't guess anything else it could be so I think it would be fairly safe to blame the analog side of the connection.
