Q: XP loads fine . Then lock the taskbar for a while . everything is ok?
OK so I upgrade from Win2K to WinXP Pro. Everything went smoothly and now my system runs fine . Besides this small quibble I have.
My desktop loads and ICQ and Serv-U will load up . but when I go to start click on the bar . the icon changes to an hourglass and I can not open the program, I can menu.
But things my desktop . including open pics . or right click and go to properties and look at my display properties.
Then after 2 minutes or so . I can use the START bar and all fine.
I I was running a dual P3-933, 256MB, 60GB 7200.
Im just curious why that is this.
No anitvirus yet, but I have Norton Firewall installed. But I doubt it is the firewall as they do this in win2k . is.
Reinstalled or maybe the firewall . The same would help problem.
Any appreciated.

Re:OK, so I only have one network connextion setup… and that's my cable connection that's always on.
It seems like norton antivirus and firewall start-up… then the system locks the taskbar… So I open IE browser and it says.. detecting settings.
So I'm pretty sure it's doing something with the network while it locks the bar… but it only shows me one active network connection (my cable one).
Is there way to see all active connections without using the stupid network window… like in the registry or prompt?
I must also mention that after the pause.. then the little speaker icon appears on the taskbar… so maybe it's also the sound card. (I have the latest drivers for that too.)
Maybe I'll just reformat this weekend and go back to win2k… I just want a speedy stable OS>.. win2k was doing fine… and it sucks because I installed winXP for my friend and his PC flies!!
Granted he doesn't have a SB Live and it's an AMD 1700 with 256 DDR… oh well!!
Maybe I'll just remove the live and see what happens.
I'm so depressed… I hate when my PC isn't working well…
Someone say something nice to cheer me up.

Re:This is a network (lack of network) issue.
How many network interfaces do you have? are they connected to any media (phone line, cat5 cable, etc)? Are they active at boot (ie: cable/dsl/lan … anything that's always on)?
Typically what XP does is run through all of the interfaces on startup. If a connection has been set up on an interface, it attempts to establish it (ie: connecting to the dhcp server to get an IP, registering with a switch to set up an arp/routing table, etc). If the media isnt present (cord is unplugged, wireless is unavailable, etc), it hangs for a few seconds during the timeout.
I'm not entirely sure there's a fix for this. Disable any hardware you're not using (no reason to have it check a modem if you're using cable/lan) or delete the connections so it doesnt try to check them. Make sure you leave the active one in place, though ![]()

Re:Thanks for the reply!!
I guess I'll try uninstalling serv-U and maybe disabling file and printer sharing.
Do I still need the client for microsoft network to be installed?
I know I need the tcp/ip… it's quite frustrating.. damn windows XP!! Microsoft ought to fix this bug… because it's really bugging me!!!
Oh well… thanks again.

Re:I am having this exact same problem. I have a 2GHZ Pentium 4 with 140gb HDD and 256 mb RDRAM… When it starts up, everything else on the desktop works fine except the Taskbar locks for like a minute or so and then everything works fine.
The problem is definitely the lack of a network. Windows XP tries to search for a network and locks up temporarily. I also run Serv-U (maybe this is the culprit). I used to run this system on a T1 local network, and right when I physically took it off the network, this taskbar lockup starting occuring.
I was unable to find a fix for it, but I believe you should try uninstalling Serv-U….
I am not sure, but since I'm going to put my system back on the network next week, I figure I hold handle the taskbar being frozen for a minute on startup.
good luck. =]

Re:I guess the problem still exists.
I hard-coded the network settings… still no luck.
I did have problems with adaptec easy cd creator… and even though I've uninstalled it I'm still having problems… winXP tells me it has to disable the cd-recording software because it could cause instability. Are they any files I need to delete manually?

Re:Thanks… I think it's the network… it seems to be trying to log onto a network that doesn't exist. Or that's what I think it's doing while it just sits there!!
So I'll try and assign a fixed IP… hope that works.
Thanks for the help!
guy.
Re:guy, are you using DSL or cable with DHCP? If you are, then it is prolly trying to access the network, but cant since you have not logged on yet. The fix for this is to assign yourself an IP like 192.168.2.1 and then it will go away.
Re:I think it is trying to start the network, but im not sure. it happens on my winxip sometimes, but not a lot.
Re:how many things do you have running at startup? have you tried lightening the load a little bit?
