Q: Hi there,
I had a device conflicts and problems during installation of a sound card driver. After that, my modem and CDRW had some driver conflicts . It was a big old conflict between devices party.
So, I checked the XP System Restore and restored to how it was stuff a few days in advance. Now, all drivers seem ok. But .
Does anyone know of any problems with XP (Home, if it matters) System?
Thanks!

System restore is good if you install/un-install alot of programs/drivers/DX versions etc. System works is a plus, but a program called RegClean works just as well.
Do NOT use RegClean on WinXP!
This tool was written for Win9x, not WinXP. It is bad, evil, nasty!
And it doesn't come close to doing what System Restore does, even if it did work properly on WinXP, which it does not.
He wasn't saying RegClean is a substitute for System Restore , he was saying Regclean works just well as System Works, the application by Norton IIRC for cleaning and removing redundant entries outta the registry.
And you are getting confused…
RegCleaner – the reg cleaning application by Microsoft isn't supported by XP – heck MS don't even provide it for download anymore but RegClean – the tool provided in the JV16 Powertools (http://www.jv16.org/) is fully supported by XP and does an excellent job at cleaning out all the cr@p.
Re:I've used it once or twice–it worked for me.

Re:I have XP on 3 different systems and restore has never worked for me, even after a fresh install, so I can't say it is any good form my experience. Acronis True Image is the best way to go as far as back ups go IMO.

Same here. Takes up too much disk space and i never use it. If i mess it up i used the WinXP CD ro repair and i'm good to go.
Can you use a Windows XP CD on a PC that came with a Manufacturer's CD such as Dell? They don't have a Windows CD and the CD they do have doesn't have a repair option. *mutter*Stupid PC makers and their crap CDs*mutter*

it has always caused more problems than it's solved for me =/ i disable it as soon as i get a fresh install working

Re:maybe for "some" virii. But I'm doubting it would fix it all if the viral code if it was well written.
Re:Does it work well for virus problems? A neighbor has been ahving computer problems ever since that blaster worm thing a few weeks back. Would doing a restore to say 2 months ago wipe out the traces of the worm? She's having problems getting things to download via windows udpate and other places that download things via the web.
Can't seem to find anything else that works…
Re:System Restore is awesome
Re:System Restore has never failed me. I have used it about 20+ times running XP Home.

Re:I have used it many times as well…and many times it has come to my rescue (what with the crappy DX9 and all). I don't have Norton system works.
Re:I have used it several times – especially after installing an upgrade or driver that has a problem impacting on other software. I find it very good – but you need Norton System Works along with it – and everytime you install or uninstall anything, run WinDoctor and it will clean up your registry of the garbage left behind.
System Restore is a big plus in my book.
