You can “double split a connection using two routers? [cheap solution] [linux box]

Q: Heres my situation, I share a single IP address of my roommates and I using a set up as a router. At this moment I have an ethernet cable in my room, and I have two computers. I wonder if there is a cheaper way that I can connect two computers on a single Ethernet connection?

The easy (and relatively cheap) solution would be to just buy another hub and keep it in my room. However, I was hoping there might be a software solution, which I can put two network cards into a computer and some software to act as a hub. Anyone know anything about this?

Am I mean, I have to just buy a hub?

Re:Basically you will be"daisy-chainning" two pcs to a router/switch

Re:ICS

Internet connection sharing…not exactly as "high-tech" and "cool" but it'll do the job

You must keep that"hub " pc on all the time however to use the next one

Good luck

Re:Have seen them on clearance at Staples for as low as 15.00 for a four port Hub.
Yes you are being too cheap.
Byte the bullet and go get a switch and be finished with it. Don't ask the software to do a job that hardware
can do very efficiently.

Re:It's not worth the hassle of going the software route. It's a pain to set up, and the computer that is sharing its connection must remain on at all times.

Get a $25 4-port fastethernet switch. Buy.com has a 5-port model for $28 with free shipping right now.

Re:"should I just buy another hub?"
Yes. Go to the HotDeals forum and look for a promotion for a hub or switch. You can get one for $20-30 nowadays.
Other than that I guess you can put 2 NICs in one machine and run either ICS if you have a windows machine or other software like wingate….
