Q: Do you think Windows 2000 is here to stay and heavy for a while longer supported by the hardware and software manufacturers releasing new hardware and software products?
Or do you think it is almost obsolete and will soon not be supported by the latest software and hardware?
Do you want to stay here for a while longer?
I think its a good OS and am totally fine with a 2000 stabbing around for much longer.

Well, there's supported, and there's supported.
I bought a mouse two months ago, and discovered the extra buttons on the thing required the manufacturer's drivers…which are only available for XP, not 2k.
Still works as a mouse, but I have 3 dead buttons.
Did you try just installing the XP drivers? I haven't met a situation where they didn't work.
Re:I run Windows 2000 on my old laptop and it runs GREAT. To me it's the best OS that Microsoft has put out.
XP is great, but Windows 2000 is the most stable and has the least amount of crap imbedded in it.
Re:I used to use Windows 2000 until XP stabilized. Now I don't think I could go back. With the upcoming release of Windows Vista Windows 2000 will be history
Re:Windows 2000 is great. I bet XP would slow down my PIII server with 128MB of PC133 RAM to a crawl. Windows 2000 runs smooth as butter.
Re:There is life left in 2K,how much I'm not sure,I have to say for the record WinXP with SP2 is my favourite Microsoft OS and the most stable for me, so byebye 2K, XP is the King as far as I'm concerned.

Actually, W2K Pro has ended support and is now in extended support until 7/13/2010. Extended support means free security fixes, paid system patches (Extended support contract.) Extended support contracts are not available for consumers, hardware, multimedia, or business solutions. No requests for changes are allowed.
We were on extended for NT until it ended last year. It is not what I would consider cheap.
Edit – looked up server. It is also in Extended support. MS has a product lifecycle site with all of the dates for almost all of their products.
Pretty sad that Windows 2000 didn't get anytime in mainstream support while POS Windows 98/ME support was completely ditched. How stupid was it for Microsoft to extend support for POS Windows 98/ME. Windows 2000 would have had a good 1.5 years of mainstream support left without POS Widnows 98/ME being supported at all if only MS ended support for POS Windows 98/ME in January 2004 like they originall planned.
Microsoft should have ignored the whining customers using POS Windows 98/ME and told them the reason we are not going to support them anymore is because they are POS operating systems. They should have made it clear that if Windows 2000 mainstream support was going to end abnormally early, people running Windows 2000 would have a right to whine and complain because Windows 2000 is still a fine and good OS. But people running POS Windows 98/ME had no right to complain because they were running POS operating systems and should have been forced to get with the times, or been stuck using older software on older hardware.
Oh boy.. here we go again
:disgust:

Re:Virtually everything that supports XP, will 'support' 2K without even trying. The only games that have been 'XP Only' so far were only that way because the installer was designed to block their installation, not due to any base incompatibilities. The games seem to have run fine once the installation was forced. I believe microsoft is the only developer to do this, since they have a vested interest.
Re:Microsoft is actively working on killing Windows 2000. They're in the business of selling new software, not supporting old software to the point of interference with sales of new software.
They had a web page that specifically said that game vendors should not support Windows 2000, although I couldn't find it just now. It's possible that I just missed finding it now, but I guess that's unlikely — as a position paper, it should have been easily visible. I think it was taken down because its stench bothered some people.
Re:I think all versions of Windows 2000 are supported until July 2010.
Correct.

If only display driver architecture were that simple.
And that is the answer. DX10 virtualizes Graphics memory and adds GPU scheduling. Serious kernel differences are required. And why spin up a huge dev team to add it to stuff that is EOL already on the calendar? BTW, I think the 2010 end date for W2K is for server versions.

Well there we go. I wasn't quite sure about that.
I guess that pretty much limits gaming on the Windows 2000 platform, if the games require DirectX 10
Well, it would also limit games on XP too, for that matter, which would p1ss off a lot of people.
I'd assume most games would be able to run in DX9 mode. (Halo2 NOT included :disgust: )

Re:I think it'll likely be around as long as people are running older systems (like the one in my sig) that aren't quite robust enough to run XP. Once that old hardware finally goes south the days of 2000 will prolly be numbered.

Totally agree with you there.

I'd hope so.
It annoys the hell out of me when some developers specify that an app or game is 'XP only' for no good reason.
Luckily though, most of the best popular games still have 2K support, and will hopefully continue to do so.

Re:Win 2000 was my most stable O/S but its days were numbered when Win XP Pro emerged. My newest build has replaced my old Win 2000 graphic machine. One of my students will get the most of it.
I canl still use the O/S on older machines only when the need arises, but its Win XP Pro for now.

Re:Win2k was my most favorite and stable OS but winxp has finally beat it out. I recently converted my last win2k desktop to xp (I still run a server with win2k though).
But I see no reason why win2k should go end of life. I only removed it from my desktop because winxp just has some features that I have really grown accustomed to, like remote desktop.
Re:Microsoft is currently scheduled to end support for Windows 2000 on July 13, 2010. It could be extended, but I highly doubt it.
That said, third party software that is released for XP (or even Vista) should work in most cases on Windows 2000.
Re:i guess thats really up to the game designers. i have no comment on that, im not a huge gamer

with the push back of the new win desktop OS i think people will stick with 2k for a while longer simply for economical and unstable issues with the new os's
my 2 cents
