That was the reason I stopped using ZA, same thing happened, boot up and it kept popping up a blank warning. Had to reinstall zone alarm. Decided to reinstall xp without ZA. use built in xp one its very good. >>

The reason why the built in firewall isn't enough is because things can still be sent out of your computer. So, if you have a trojan virus or something sending information out, a 3rd party firewall can detect and notify you of this. The built in firewall just makes your computer stealth to the internet. A good way to check this is to use LeakTest and Shields Up! port scan and probe at: http://grc.com

I know some people think Steve Gibson is paranoid, but I think better safe than sorry.

Re:i c, i only recently started using firewall protection

zone alarm was on the top of a few lists, do i d/led it a few (5?) days ago

using the trial version of zonealarm right now, and before i get it could you recommend something better? >>

I was tired when I wrote that :) What I was trying to say is that the best type of firewall (for incomming attacks) is one that isn't on the target machine. Of course that setup isn't as good for stoping trojens (win some, lose some ;) )

How long ago was the demo downloaded? They update it on a regular basis.

Re:I've had a lot of troubles with XP and ZoneAlarm. When I install ZA, everything works great until I reboot. Then it blocks all activity from me to the internet. I have to uninstall ZA, reboot the machine until I can finally get to the internet again. I haven't found a fix for it yet. In fact, I have ZA installed on a different XP computer off my router, and it works just fine. Now that's frustrating.

Anyway, I think i'll try TPF instead. Thanks for the tip.

Another firewall that I'm thinking of moving to is Tiny Personal Firewall. It protects you just as well, but has a tinier footprint – hence the name…"Tiny Personal Firewall". Con: It's a little bit on the hardcore side. But, if you can understand it, it's probably better than ZA.

Shoot…I think I'll just uninstall ZA and install TPF right now. :)

Re:It probably isn't the issue if you did have it working, but ZoneAlarm breaks every time MS releases a patch for their network/winsock.

Slighly off topic, but ZoneAlarm isn't the best type of firewall, I was doing a port and vunerbility scan against a Win 98 box with Zone Alarm and it didn't stop it from rebooting :) Interestingly ZoneAlarm never noticed the fact they it was being scanned.

Re:Click on the "lock" tab.

What does it say?
